apistogrammoides pucallpaensis, the dwarf t-bar cichlid

The tiny T-Bar Dwarf Cichlid is the only member of the monotypic genus Apistogrammoides. This genus differs from Apistogramma only in the number of spines contained in the anal fin (3 vs. 8), and is otherwise quite similar; in fact, recent genetic research has shown that some members of the genus Apistogramma are more closely related to these fish than to other members of their own genus!
Apistogrammoides are smaller members of the group, and tend to be a bit more shy than other species. Like most wild Apistogramma, it is important to keep these fish in conditions somewhat similar to their natural habitat; they will do best in an acidic to slightly acidic pH, low hardness, and warmer temperatures. Leaf litter, driftwood, and other tannin producing decorations are highly recommended.
Suggested tank mates for these fish would include any other neotropical tetras, pencilfish, or hatchet fish. Smaller members of the rainbowfish genus Pseudomugil also mix well with these fishes. Small Cory cats and Loricariids may also be kept. These fish are ideal for a small, planted aquarium.
