Blind Cave Tetra, Astyanax jordani

While definitely not the most colourful tetra available, the Blind Cave Tetra is a truly unique fish. At some point in their evolutionary history, these fish split from the Mexican Tetra ( Astyanax mexicanus ), while isolated in caves. They also lost functional eyes, which doesn't seem to effect this particular species at all. They use their latteral line and strong sense of smell instead.
These fish can be successfully maintained in virtually any community aquarium, and are non aggressive. Their larger size makes it possible to keep these fish with larger species, as well, provided they are not large enough to eat or bother the Blind Cave Fish, nor too boisterous. They can be maintained with most larger tetras (e.g., Congo Tetras), barbs, danios, and most moderate sized cichlids.
