A beautiful, small, shoaling fish, pencil fish should never be maintained in numbers less than about six. Some individuals of this species of pencilfish will develop dark red on the body, while others will have a generally golden body. These small fish will mix well with any community, and are strongly recommended for a planted aquarium. They can also be used as dither fishes for Apistogramma.
