Electric Blue Acara

The Electric Blue Acara appears to be a man-made variant, with little or no evidence as to its actual origins. First appearing in the US Markets around 2012, these fish made a huge splash. They are incredibly hardy, and absolutely stunning, yet no one knows exactly what they are. There is some suspicion that they may be a hybrid species, but the more likely scenario is that they are simply a aberrant mutation of the common Blue Acara (Andinacara pulcher), or a similar species. They do appear to breed true.

Like other "Electric Blue" mutations, such as rams and dempseys, this mutation appears to lower their aggression level, and these fish are a bit more peaceful than the standard blue acara. Adult males often have longer, flowing fins, and care should be taken to avoid putting them in with any nippy species, such as super active danios, barbs, and the like. They are very forgiving of water conditions, and we haven't had any trouble keeping them at all.

Their larger adult size means that small tetras, rasboras, and the like are likely to become snacks. We recommend mixing this with various catfishes, other relatively peaceful cichlids, and moderately sized tetras or rainbowfish. .
