Cleithracara maroni

The Keyhole Cichlid is one of the original Acara type fishes in the hobby, having been around since the early 20th century. These shy, peaceful cichlids are an ideal addition to the aquarium, being relatively unconcerned by water conditions. They can be sensitive to rising levels of organic waste, so care must be taken to keep the aquarium water clean.

Although a bit bigger than most dwarf cichlids, the Keyhole is very peaceful, though breeding pairs can be territorial. (They are, after all, cichlids!). They will generally leave even small fish alone, though we wouldn't tempt them with any of the Microrasbora or similarly small fish. These fish will mix well with large pencilfish, Guttattus tetras, various barbs, rainbowfish, and the like.
